OCEAN FALLS REPORT by Peter Marshall
Negotiations Of members who voted, 86% of Local 312 voted in favour of
accepting the settlement; Local 360 voted 81% in favour.
For the two special meetings at which the wage delegates gave their
reports, members were invited to bring their wives. This was done
because of the social implications of this year's settlement ie.
Pensions and supplementary vacations.
There exist in Ocean Falls a general air of unrest and uncertainty.
There is much talk of "getting out". Everyone is wondering what is going
to happen to them, following announcements by CZCL concerning changes in
the mill.
Best wishes to Paddy Burns, new manager of the local bowling alleys.
Congratulations to the local Rod and Gun Club for the work they are
putting in on Link Lake. [continued on page 2]
Sorry to see that John and Millie Fair are
ending their long run as agents for BC Airlines. They will now
concentrate on the radio repair side of their business ( and maybe
television one day?).
Committee Appointments Gunter Hogrefe and Eric Day will handle the
chores of the Apprenticeship Committee for Local 312, George Nairn, Mike
Mollick and Peter Marshall will handle the Plant Construction Committee,
which will look out for jurisdictional and other problems in connection
with the plant modernization program.
May Meeting We are experimenting with a door-to-door delivery of our
meeting agenda on the afternoon prior to the meeting in the evening.
This is an effort to stimulate interest and attendance during the
normally slack summer months.
Main item at the May meeting was a notice of motion that Local 312 will
send its full quota of five delegates to the New York International
Convention in September. The treasurer pointed out that the recent wage
conference had cost Local 312 just over $5,000, and we still have four
local contracts to negotiate: the hotel, the HBC Store, Nelson's Laundry
and Johnston Terminals.
