Western Pulp and Paper
August 1965 Page 1 OCEAN FALLS REPORT by Peter Marshall
Local Scene Automatic washers and dryers have been installed in all the
construction bunkhouses; part of the Construction contract. How about
installing dryers in the apartment blocks?
Word is that there is a prospect that we will get television soon.
Belated word of appreciation to Frank Howard, MP and
John Fair for the work they did in getting
CBC radio into Ocean Falls via microwave some time ago. Reception is now
perfect. It blots out CKWX but this will be changed by September we
hope.
Would also like to acknowledge the prompt action of local Management in
ordering that the barbed wire that was strung around the Mill Gate, be
taken down. It seems that there was a problem with local teenagers
climbing the gate late at night and getting into the mill, so someone
decided that barbed wire was the way to stop this. However, as soon as
management saw the proposed solution, they vetoed it.
Martin Inn Negotiations The issues under dispute are Union requests for
a differential for Sunday and Statutory Holiday work (15 cents per
hour), this work is presently straight time. Also a request for three
days paid sick leave. The company's position is that the Martin Inn is
part of the catering industry and the catering industry does not
recognize premium time for Sunday and holiday work.
July Meeting
Main item of business was the unanimous vote in favour of a motion to
empower the executive to take a referendum vote on the question of the
Local levying an assessment of one dollar per day per member to toward a
strike fund in the event that we are forced to take strike action in the
Martin Inn negotiations.
Membership approved a donation of $50 to the Grain Handlers Strike.
Membership approved the Local paying the costs of bringing a lawyer to
Ocean Falls to defend one of your members who was charged with a traffic
offence. Reason for this action was problems that we have been having
over the condition of the local Johnston Terminals vehicles.
Unrest ?? From January 1st to July 1st for the Martin Inn there have
been 361 hirings and 417 quitters.
