Jack Bouzek - Foot Note
The demise of a regular passenger service to South Africa left the British Government in a fix, as many of the Union Castle ships called at St Helena. The Foreign Office contracted Curnow Shipping Limited to establish a subsidiary called ‘St Helena Shipping Company’ to operate a passenger/freight service. A Canadian ship ‘Northland Prince’ was purchased and refitted for the purpose and served from 1977 until 1990. It was an old ship, dating from 1963, and much smaller and less comfortable than a Union Castle Liner. But the ship served the needs of the islanders and also assisted during the Falklands War in 1982. From http://www.ballofdirt.com/entries/20381/276803.html |
