September 1966 Page 7 CORRESPONDENT REPORTS by Eric Day Local 312 voted
95% to accept the two year contract as recommended by the wage
delegates. Some members were opposed to a two year contract, but the
vast majority were genuinely satisfied with the contract.
Discrimination
Because of an argument over tire pressure, which resulted in complaints
being made against the driver, Townsite Department pulled the driver off
the truck and reduced his hourly rate by twenty-two cents. The local has
applied the Grievance procedure.
The displaced driver charges discrimination in that the salaried foreman
is using the incident to get at him because of a personal conflict over
union matters. This is not the first time the charge of discrimination
has been made against the Old Guard in this department.
I am reminded of how two former shop stewards charged discrimination
when they became involved in the infamous "Key" incident and later in
the petty "Cupboard" incident some years back. One shop steward has
since left. The other steward, often referred to as a difficult employee
by the Old Guard leadership, has transferred to the mill where, I
understand he is regarded as a good employee.
RCMP A correspondent informs me that RCMP Cpl. Paul Gilchrist former NCO
in charge of the Ocean Falls detachment was in the witness stand giving
evidence against the strikers in the Lenkurt Electric dispute.
While Cpl. Gilchrist was in Ocean Falls the local was forced to protest
to the Attorney-General's department his refusal to bring arrested
members before the local magistrate in order to get bail.
On another occasion, we met head-on in conflict over his reluctance to
charge a local company under the Motor Vehicle Act after seven of the
company's employees, our members, gave him prime testimony that the
company was in violation of the Act. Later, the company was charged and
convicted.
