In Memoriam [photo of Bert Ollett] Bert Ollet, affectionally known as
Mr. Local 312 died last month in Vancouver. Bert was born in 1866* and
came to Ocean Falls in 1919. At the time of his retirement in 1947 he
was working in the Finishing Room. Bert was an Honorary Life Member of
Local 312, wage delegate and a convention delegate.
[* 1866 seems to be incorrect for a birth date as this would make him 81
at retirement in 1947. I did a little checking and found that Ethelbert
John Ollett was born Dec. 16, 1876 in Norfolk, England. He came to
Canada in 1901, was married in 1909 in Vancouver to Annie Elizabeth
Smith. She was born in Birmingham, England and died in Ocean Falls in
1928. Their daughter Frances Annie Ollett married in Ocean Falls in 1930
to Peter Edward Gilchrist. An obituary in the Vancouver Sun for Bert
John Ollett (formerly of Ocean Falls ) indicates he was survived by one
son, Ernest of Los Angelas and one daughter Mrs. F. Gilchrist of New
Westminster. --- DL]
OCEAN FALLS REPORT by Eric Day
Construction Dispute A dispute arose when three men form the Vancouver
Iron Works arrived to begin work on No 1 turbine without the permission
of the Local's Construction Committee. We protested the violation and
were, as usual, showered with apologies and told that it would not
happen again. Two of the workmen returned to Vancouver; the foreman
remained on as adviser.
Snow Removal Every year the local citizens complain to our committee
that fire escapes and main walkways are not being cleared off after a
snow fall. Management claim they spend more on snow removal in Ocean
Falls than most municipalities.
No First Aid The Northland Prince, Northland Navigation's newest
addition to the Northland fleet came under sharp criticism recently
because it does not carry adequate and proper first aid facilities on
board.
An Ocean Falls resident received a painful injury to her thumb while
returning to town on the Northland Prince. The only first aid assistance
she could get was a band aid and no one on board was qualified to
administer first aid.
Television We in Ocean Falls are now getting television and there are
many discussions concerning the quality of the transmission received
from Terrace. Those on the outside are discussing the quality of the
pictures received from the moon.

I take this opportunity to congratulate my brother Russell Jack on his
installation as recording secretary of Local 312. This is a first for
Ocean Falls - two brothers being recording secretaries for their
respective locals.

new season with 15 active members. Officers of the club are: Alex Pirie
as president; John Baker vice-president and Peter Frew as secretary.
Membership dues are $20 initiation, then $10 per year.
