OCEAN FALLS SAFETY REPORT by Peter Marshall
Apprenticeship Our first set of apprentices have just returned from
Vocational School. They report problems with accommodation and financial
problems through having to keep two homes going.
December Meting A donation of $25 was approved for the Steelworkers'
strike at Craigmont. Notice of motion was made that we send two
delegates to the Winter School at Parkesville.
Local Scene No television yet; January is now the projected month.
Still no word from Crown Zellerbach as to their future plans for Ocean
Falls. Up to December 21st we had 1002 quitters. This includes staff and
hourly paid workers in the mill and Martin Inn, a handful of employees
transferred to Elk Falls, plus the University students who come up for
the summer. The total payroll is only some 1100.
A side issue is that we cannot fill the Union Executive positions. There
is just no one here who can fill the eligibility clause of not having
missed more than two regular monthly meetings in succession in the12
month period prior to the election.
Miscellaneous We have always complained about having the highest plane
fare per mile ($42 one way to Vancouver, 325 miles). Now it appears that
we also have the highest taxi fare of any community.
NEWS AND VIEWS by Alex Jack, Local 360 Safety Since my last report there
have been four additional injuries in the mill, brining the total so far
to 17. Three of these were in the groundwood mill.
Townsite I wouldn't be surprised to hear a lot of comments regarding the
road conditions on Christmas day as they were very hazardous, I believe
there were quite a few medical cases due to this.
Freeze Up Due to the sudden cold spell, no less than 20 people
complained or requested Townsite Supervision to send a pipe fitter as
the water pipes had frozen or burst during the night. I would like to
commend those pipe fitters who volunteered to go to work on Boxing day
and also the people who gave up part of their statutory holiday to sand
the roads in the early hours of the same day.
Bowling News
Congratulations to Paddy Burns, the manager of the local bowling alley
for the organization of a Pee Wee bowling league. There are 19 teams in
the league.
