OCEAN FALLS REPORT by Eric Day

Refused Bail Once again a member of Local 312 has been arrested and refused bail. The reason given for refusal by RCMP Cpl. P. Gilchrist was that anyone arrested on a warrant cannot be granted bail. Vancouver lawyer Harry Rankin states that bail can be and is granted on arrest by warrant, providing the Ocean Falls authorities arrange it with the Magistrate who made out the arrest warrant. Failure then, to pick up the telephone by the RCMP or responsible party is a denial of civil liberties to our members and the citizens of this community.

Over the years, I have, on behalf of the local written letters to the Attorney General's Department protesting the RCMP methods of refusing bail in Ocean Falls. No satisfactory replies have been received.

Every conviction that we have appealed thus far, the Appeal Court Judge has favoured us with a reversal of the Ocean Falls Judgement. As one Appeal Court Judge remarked, after reading the roughshod transcripts of a Summary Conviction trial "Something should be done about Ocean Falls"

Food Prices The ads on TV show that the Ocean Falls housewives are paying 15 to 20 cents more for staple groceries.
