October 1965 Page 4 OCEAN FALLS REPORT by Peter Marshall

International Convention The New York convention raised a storm in Ocean Falls. Following the delegates' (Peter Marshall and Eric Day) report a motion was put forward that we take a referendum on whether the membership wants to "go Canadian". A breakaway move was also evident in Ocean Falls following the 1962 Detroit Convention. One of the contentious issues is a further 25 cent per capita tax increase to be paid to the International, of which 45% goes to paying the salaries of the International Executive.

Local Scene Brothers George Shaw, Gunter Hogrefe and George Nairn are to be commended for putting in long hours recently looking after the affairs of Local 312.

Not impressed with the new paint job on the apartment blocks around town: a combination of red, bilious yellow and sickly green.

More complaints from the cafeteria; however this time it is the hourly paid and staff personnel causing the problem. The relaxing of the rules through the Union's efforts has brought with it abusers by the small minority - individuals who take six or seven glasses of juice, five or six desserts, over abundant portions of the main courses and then just waste them.

The Johnston Terminals members rejected their settlement offer after the bargaining committee had recommended acceptance. Nelson's Laundry members voted 100% to accept. Hudson's Bay people have yet to vote of their offer.

September Meeting Brother Gunter Hogrefe and Peter Marshall were elected to attend the BC Fed Convention and the Western Canada Council meetings. A proposal for salaries to be paid to all of our Local Union Officers was introduced as a notice of motion. This will come up at our October 26th meeting.

The question of increased dues was raised in view of the International Per capita Tax. Current dues are $4.00 per month. As of January 1, 1966 $2.25 of the $4.00 will have to be sent to New York, leaving $1.75 remaining to run the Local. Currently we remit over $20,000 to the International per year.

Miscellaneous I would like to acknowledge some excellent service from Mr. and Mrs. Red Reiffier, local BC Airlines agents.

Also, commendations to Tom Mudie for the tremendous job he is doing trying to get an Ocean Falls Centennial project off the ground.
