November 1965 Page 2 OCEAN FALLS REPORT by Peter Marshall
Eliminate Time Clocks The time clock system is outdated; it is time it
was eliminated.
Web Feet Ocean Falls has had 35 inches of rain in the first 22 days in
October; this is on top of nine inches in the last two days of
September. The record rainfall for one month in Ocean Falls stands at
fraction over 50 inches (December 1961 ??). The record for one day's
rainfall is just over nine inches.
Television By the time this column is printed we should only be a matter
of days away from receiving our first TV signal (one channel, and canned
at that). Acknowledgments to Crown Zellerbach who have finally got
mobile on this matter and have really put in a lot of work, and money to
make this a reality.
Contract Negotiations Local 312 has finally wrapped up all contract
negotiations for 1965. Johnston Terminals, Hudson's Bay and Nelson's
Laundry Agreements have been ratified. Estimated cost for all five
contract negotiations this years for Local 312 is $8,000.
Election of Officers What a fiasco. No one would stand for 2nd
Vice-President, Secretary, Financial Secretary, Treasury or Guard, and
we are one short on the Standing Committee and one trustee. Eric Day has
had four years as Secretary and has moved to Standing Committee. Gunter
Hogrefe has moved to Executive board member at large. Mike Marchuk and
Stan Edwards are back as trustees. George Nairn takes the 1st
Vice-President position after one year on the Standing Committee.
Russell Jack is on the Standing Committee and Jim Forrest comes in as
Safety Representative. Wage delegates are Peter Marshall, Eric day and
George Nairn.
Well Done A word of appreciation to local United Church Minister Rev.
Eric Beech for the excellent job he is doing assisting Native Indians to
obtain employment in Ocean Falls.
October Meeting Three of the seven vacancies in the Local were filled:
Andy Michno as trustee; Harry Rath on Standing Committee; and Herb
McKeen as Treasurer. Andy and Harry have both worked as shop stewards
and Herb has been Chairman of the Shop Stewards for two years
The meeting voted to implement the system of salaries for all elected
officers. Brothers Russell Jack and George Nairn were elected to
represent the Local at the Safety Conference.
The motion at the September meeting for the Local to take a referendum
on the question of whether the membership wants to go Canadian has been
ruled unconstitutional and was therefore not brought before this
meeting.

REPORT FROM OCEAN FALLS by Alex Jack
Old Problems
Children's play area and dryers for the apartments and Kildala Bunkhouse
have been requested by both Townsite Committees. The question regarding
a children's play area seems to be location. We are informed that the
dryers have been put into the budget for the spring, subject to
approval. This is the same company that provided a new tennis court
costing $16,000.00 without any hesitation and also installed dryers in
the bunkhouses which are to be used by outside construction workers.
Thanks Thanks to Brothers G. Nairn, G. Hogrefe, and E. Day of Local 312
Townsite committee for their co-operation on townsite matters.
