OCEAN FALLS REPORT by Peter Marshall
Snow slide
Much has already been written about the tragic results of the snow slide
at Ocean Falls on the night of January 13, 1965. Considering that this
column will not appear in print until late February I will give only
passing mention of it. It must be acknowledged very sincerely the
appreciation that the people feel toward Crown Zellerbach Canada Ltd.
for the way the Company have helped the citizens of this community
re-establish themselves.
January Meeting The meeting extended a vote of thanks to Local 312
treasurer, Brother Cy Bamford for the excellent job he is doing.
Ocean Falls Advertiser John Buchanan and his wife Dorothy who publish
"The Ocean Falls Advertiser" will be obtaining new printing equipment
and will be back in business very shortly. Their printing plant was
wiped out by the slide and they lost all their equipment. They have been
doing a temporary job putting out a mimeographed sheet.
Visitors to Town Arriving on the boat was Brother Reno Biasutti and Don
Gray of the Job Evaluation Board. Unfortunately due to the pressure of
other work resulting from the slide, we had to ask the two Board members
to stay on the boat and return to Vancouver. We have now been able to
reschedule their visit for the week of February 1st.
Sour Notes A black mark to Northland Navigation who have failed to even
give a simple acknowledgment to our letters concerning the refusal of
this Shipping Company to allow friends and relatives to go on board the
Northland Prince to say farewell to departing passengers.
It appears that certain comments in these columns concerning the quality
of food in the local Cafeteria are being twisted. These comments were
not a criticism of the cooks, but against the Steam Table System which
mutilates and destroys the quality of the food.
