OCEAN FALLS SAFETY REPORT by Alex Jack LOCAL 360 We have had thirteen
disabling injuries this year. Here is a comment on numbers 10 to 13.
Number 10: A helper was called into work as a rollbucker on number one
paper machine. He was flipped onto the Spring Roll of the winder and
struck his head while attempting to stop a spinning reel when the
friction had come out. He had been in the department four months. The
helper had worked day shift the previous day and then was called in to
work that night on the 12-8 am shift and then called in to work at 10:30
am on the day of the accident.
Number eleven: A carpenter millwright was working on a slopping bank
under the road on Marine Drive when he stepped on a piece of lumber and
fell wrenching his knee.
Number twelve: A relief shift foreman went to pick broke off a rope in
the dryer section of number four paper machine. As he stepped onto the
catwalk, his foot slipped and his right hand, fist clinched, went into
the nip of the felt and the dryer, The friction took some skin off
knuckles and skin grafting is necessary.
Number thirteen: On number four paper machine there was a loose wrap of
a two foot tail around the drum in the dryer section. The backtender was
going to remove it with an air hose. In the meantime, Danny, the
machinetender reached in to remove it by hand. His left arm went into
the nip of the felt and dryer, receiving lacerations and friction burns
to his arm. Skin grafting is necessary. Latest word is that his
condition is good, but he will be off work for several months. At
present he is in Vancouver General Hospital.
Congratulation to Brothers Jim Prine, Dave Baumgartner and Mr. Koopman

Miscellaneous
Ocean Falls sent two lads to the Bronze boxing Tournament and we have
received word that one was a winner.
I understand local vehicle drivers are having problems with the children
sweeping the sand off the roads so they can sleigh ride after snow
falls. Specific hills are usually reserved for sleigh riding.
