OCEAN FALLS REPORT by Peter Marshall

Job Evaluation

Brother Ivan Pedersen has quit the mill so I have stepped in to take his position on the Job Evaluation Committee.

September Meeting

Brothers Gunter Hogrefe and myself were elected to attend the Western Canada Council and BC Federation meeting.

Safety Representative Brother Len Reitlo was elected to represent the Local at the Safety Conference in Vancouver October 15th and 16th.

Negotiations

Wage delegates Len Reitlo, Pete Freund (filling in for Eric Day who was away on vacation and leave for six weeks) and myself have been in Vancouver this past week (Sept 20 to 27) winding up the last three of our local agreements. Local 312 has five separate labour agreements in the Falls. The Hudson's Bay Store (50 members); Nelsons Laundry (10 members); a division of Johnston Terminals (8 members); Martin Inn (115 members); and Standard Labour Contract, all have to be negotiated separately

In the Mill

Fairly quiet, apart from a heated discussion with hotel management over overcrowded living accommodation in the local hourly paid women's dormitory (there is a separate one for salaried female employees).

Rents and Services

Our grievance of the Unions right to negotiate rents and services is still being processed. The increase in price of meals and the $3.00 rent increase have been implemented. Why is it that single employees of Johnston Terminals have to pay twice the rent ($72.50) per month that Crown employees do in the local hotel?

Olympic Swimmers

Congratulations to Ocean Falls swimmers Sandy Gilchrist and Ralph Hutton on their selection to the Canadian Olympic Swimming Team.

Miscellaneous

Belated congratulations to Brother Eric Day, our Secretary, on his recent marriage.

Risky Practice

A word of caution to the members of Local 312 who drift out to the time clocks and line up at the meal center before the whistle blows. This is a direct violation of the Contract. No one is going to object to five minutes legitimate wash up time, but lets not push it too far. The Company has already dropped a gentle hint in the Management Report.
