For more than 30 years, I am told, the Chinese employees of Crown have
had a bunkhouse to live in. They have not been kept in a bunkhouse
because of any discrimination, but rather that they preferred to do
their own cooking and live in comparative peace, away from the hotel.
It was inevitable, of course, that the Company would say they are losing
money by keeping a Bunkhouse open for a few people, so they decided to
close the bunkhouse where the few remaining Chinese Brothers lived. This
was done on the 15th or so of December after the Local's Standing
Committee had gone to the Company to ask that they at least leave the
bunkhouse open until after the holiday season. They tell me that some of
the Brothers who had been working on the graveyard shift were awakened
for the eviction. Happy Holidays.
... It is rumored that 15 Brothers will be laid off at the beginning of
the year ... In checking we find that there were 17 new employees, 15 of
which will now be laid off after a month or less of work. They were most
likely all told that these were steady jobs ...
The Shop Stewards have elected Brother Vic Jones, shop steward of the
Tin shop as their Chairman, for the coming year. Brother B. Van Wel will
act as Secretary. Tribute must be paid to Leroy Entner who has been
chairman of the group for over a year. ...
Local 312 will call for a joint meeting of the Pulp and Paper Workers,
the UPP and the IWA to attempt to come to some arrangement on wage
demands prior to negotiations next Spring.

The re-build (of No. 2) has been talked about ever since it was finished
and the only thing that I am going to add at this time is that the Paper
Makers tell me that the Rotoprint being made on the machine is so good
that the Supervisors have two bowls of it for breakfast every morning.
...
Many people, in particular Mechanics complain about the crossing of
trade lines and doing the other work that is not legitimately theirs. I
think it is about time that some of the persons who complain about these
matters and then ignore the countermen at the mill stores should be
reminded that it is the countermen's job to get material and no one
else's. ... I am told that they are now figuring out an idea to do away
with another counterman and have everyone serve themselves to small
items. Just remember when this happens that those who continually go
into the store to serve themselves instead of waiting for service have
helped to do a man out of a job.

A rash of accidents, one serious, resulting in an amputation makes one
wonder just what exactly is wrong with the Safety program.
After the last issue I promised not to say any more about the No. 2
Paper Machine rebuild. But, it would appear that there were no lessons
learned from that fiasco, safety wise. It is all well and good to place
direct blame for accidents on the injured person, but I would suggest
that some investigation be made to determine why an employee should get
to the point where "he just don't give a damn".
... the guys living in the hotel are getting a little disturbed about
the bills they are receiving for alleged damage to hotel property ... I
do not condone deliberate and malicious damage to rooms ... I do condemn
such practices as trying to charge people for tears in bed clothing
which is ready to fall apart and or cigarette burns which cannot in any
way be proven to [be the fault of] the present occupants of rooms.

Dan Radford, Education Representative of the CLC, arrived in town to
give our people a course in "The job of a steward and grievances" 20
members, mostly shop stewards, turned out for the two day course which
was held May 5th and 6th in the small dining room.
... Due to Brother Tom Peck's early retirement an election was held for
trustee. Brother Henry Brewer was elected by acclamation.
Why is it that couples with two or three children must live in a one
bedroom apartment for years waiting for better accommodations while we
see people with no children moving to and living in two bedroom duplexes
or houses. Wouldn't it be wiser to allocate accommodation to need?
