Ocean Falls Report
... Next year some of the Locals on the coast will be celebrating their
25th Anniversary, Local 312 being one of them. ...
... I will never be able to figure out the bosses thinking. We sat
through a month of negotiations being told how badly off the companies
were, over productions and the rest and what happens when we get to a
shut down holiday? They want to work men on the holiday so that there
will be no loss of production ...

New Pension Plan At Ocean Falls Transit by Representative Stan Green
Early in the spring of this year the General Truck Drivers and Helpers,
Local 31 of the Teamsters, and some 39 trucking firms in the Lower
Mainland Area, negotiated a Pension Agreement, effective April 1st,
1961, to be known as the Transport Service Pension Trust Plan. This plan
... was designed to cover a rather large group of employees, working for
both large and small firms who may have found it difficult to establish
a plan where the number of employees covered were very few in number.
This situation certainly applied in the case of our membership at Ocean
Falls Transit Ltd., - only nine in number. ...

After a two month absence, completion of negotiations and a trip to Cuba
I will attempt to tell what has gone on in this little metropolis in the
past few weeks.
... grievances ... we have had them all - discharges, suspensions and an
employee of 32 years service taken off his job (grievance now in process
in Vancouver).
Negotiations with the smaller contracts held by 312 have not yet been
completed, with the Hudson's Bay and Nelsons Laundry still to come to
agreement ...
... worst attended meeting of this Local was held in September when less
than 4% of the membership turned out ...
Strike donations and a notice of motion to assess the membership in the
event of trouble with the Hudson's Bay Company were two of the major
items dealt with at the meeting.
... Brothers Smalley and Diggens were elected to represent the Local at
the BC Federation of Labour Convention ...
The wood burners of the town are up in arms over the Company attempting
to discontinue cutting firewood in the mill and attempting to sell
discarded groundwood blocks. Anyone ever tried to get a 4 foot
water-logged toredo-ridden, knot-loaded block into an ordinary stove?
What happened to the agreement on Rents and Services, or isn't supplying
of firewood a service?
The lake level has come up again and with it the newsprint market had
gotten better, so the panic buttons were pushed all over to get No. 1
back together and running again. I don't know what Wall Street would do
if they didn't have Link Lake to judge the Paper Market by.
The discontent is just beginning to show as a result of the lousy
settlement this year. ... We should give serious thought to the matter
of no contract June 30, no work July 1 ..
Local 360 UPP edged out the Local 312 team for the softball championship
this year ...

Trouble With Service Contracts
Ocean Falls - For the first time Local 312 has run into difficulty in
coming to agreement with one of the employers who have operations which
service the community of OF.
The Hudson's Bay Company refused to grant even the most minor changes or
upward revision on rates during the negotiations held in OF early in
September. The only offer was a one year agreement and two small job
rate adjustments affecting 5 of the 47 employees. Negotiations were
broken off and the employees voted 87% to take further action.
Meanwhile agreements were reached on the Ocean Falls Transit agreement
and the Martin Inn.
The agreement with OF Transit states that effective Oct 1, 1961 the
company agrees to pay into the Transport Workers Trust Pension Plan an
amount of 7 cents per hour. Effective 1st April 1962, the employees will
also start to pay into the plan. Other contract benefits include
incorporating into the wage schedule the "isolation bonus" which the
employees have been receiving for some time.

The Local has said it will pull its members off the Main Safety
Committee if the company takes any further action, as they did when they
decided that lead hands should go around their crews and "analyze" the
men, with respect to Safety ...
While on safety, one of the best ideas to come out in a long time is
Groundwood Superintendent Alex Gramberg's weekly note.
A committee had been set up to look into Civil Defense for Ocean Falls.
Two questions come to mind: 1. Who and what are [we] going to defend
ourselves against? 2. Who would want to waste a bomb on Ocean Falls? ...
Ocean Falls would make a wonderful place to send Political prisoners ...
