Letter to the editor by Andy Akkerman
When I retired on 1st March, the Brothers of Local 312 gave me a great
sendoff; at the regular meeting they presented me with a brand new
electric typewriter. ... As there is no regular Legion paper published
in OF I kindly request you to allow me to also thank the members of
Branch 144 for the royal sendoff they have given me and my wife.

Ocean Falls Report by R.B. McCormick
At the March meeting Brothers Diggens, Hogrefe and Williamson were
appointed to the political education committee. A special fund had been
set up for the use of this committee but the membership must give prior
approval of any monies to be spent out of this fund. ...
Ocean Falls was privileged? the other day with a visit by the Sheriff,
minus guns and spurs. The reason for the visit was a Court Order to
evict an unemployed worker. Brother Norman "Yukon" Smith. Brother Smith
was at one time employed by Crown Zellerbach and had a service record of
nearly ten years Regardless of any other implications, it is the opinion
of this writer that no one, not even CZ has the moral right to evict a
worker who is unfortunate enough to be unemployed and if we had the
right spirit the Sheriff would have been met by a citizens picket line

312 Loses Checkoff by R.B. McCormick
A special general meeting of Local 312 declared that no officer of the
local should be requested to sign the Statutory Declaration required by
"Bill 42" to continue the checkoff.
The officers and members realized that losing the checkoff would entail
a tremendous extra work load on the local's financial officers, but took
the position that this was a matter of principle and that we could not
under any circumstances request an officer to sign this Declaration. ...

Ocean Falls Report by R.B. McCormick
The Local has decided to dis-affiliate with the I.C.F.T.U. This decision
was made primarily because of the interference the ICFTU has given in
having the CLC stop the BC Fed from acting on the resolution that was
passed at the last Convention that the Federation of Labour sponsor a
delegation to Cuba ...
It is quite obvious around the mill that the contract is up for
negotiations. The Supervisors have been called in for their annual
"Brainwashing" on costs etc. ... I wonder if the high paid brass really
know what the boys think of them when they make their strolls down the
alley way in the maintenance shops at "Smoke Time" every morning and
afternoon and their constitutional walks at 5 min to 12 and 5 ...
Quite a number of the boys are packing it up for greener pastures and in
the maintenance shops are not being replaced. (Millwrights please note
that you are not required to pick up the slack because the welding shop
is below regular standards of manpower).
