Safety Awards to Ocean Falls by Peter Marshall

August saw four Major Safety Awards go to CZ Pulp & Paper Mill in Ocean Falls.

Two WCB Meritorious Safety Awards for being the safest mill in Group "A" in the Pulp & Paper Industry in BC for 1957 and 1958. A Certificate of Achievement in Industrial Safety from the WCB for operating 1,640,821 consecutive man hours free from lost time accident. The fourth award was a Special award of Merit from the BC Safety Council.

Other awards were the Electrical department - 3rd Gold Certificate which marked 1,008,051 accident free man hours over a period of 11 years; Silver award to Lubrication and Mechanics Pool; Bronze Awards to Finishing Room, Groundwood, Kraft Mill, Paint Shop, and Paper Machines.

First championship for the papermakers since 1949. Rocky Romano was the leading hitter on the team, batting 310, Don Ward & Phil Temoin were next with .299 and .286 respectively.
