Local 312 Takes Basketball Crown

Ocean Falls - Playing before a capacity crowd the Jim Reed coached union-sponsored Local 312 team climaxed a thrilling playoff battle by eking out a 50-49 breath-taking decision from the Jokers. ...

The 312 attack was led by jump-shooting Neil McMillan, a former Vancouver Cloverleaf, and ever aggressive Scott Vanatter, a master of all shots.

Jim Reed, playing coach proved a tower of strength, both offensively and defensively ... Top rebounding chores fell on the shoulders of Sandy Morris and Don Little. Nevertheless, a team is only as strong as its bench and in Gus Robinson, George Meldrum, Paddy Burns and Hank Modras, could be found capable replacements for any first stringer.

For the Jokers Steve Gladden was the big gun with a 20 points-per-game average and "tall man" Leroy Entner proved effective under the basket.

Series point totals were: Vanatter 85; McMillan 81; Reed 58; Little 65; Morris 24; Robinson 34; Meldrum; Burns 1; Modras 6.

Local Strike News

Ocean Falls - At 8:00 a.m., November 14, 1957, pickets of Local 312 IBPS & PMW and 360 UPP took their places at the townsite end of the bridge leading to the mill here in Ocean Falls.

The mill had already been shut down in an orderly manner as scheduled ... in the 20 years of negotiations with the managements of these mills, this is the first time there had ever been a strike ... There are six pickets on duty at one time - four from Local 312, two from Local 360 .. pickets work on 2 hour spells of duty.

So far there have been no incidence of importance on the picket line. Last Saturday night there was a minor disturbance by some youngsters who were feeling their exuberance. Also, one member of management's staff refused to show his pass when requested by a picket, and one of the pickets used unseemly language when requesting a pass from one of the staff ... .

Ocean Falls, being a community of some 2000 adults compressed within a very confined area has always been noted for the multiplication of rumours. Since the start of the strike rumours seem to have been flying thick, fast and furious and in every direction in this town ...

Trade Union Education Gained from Strike Activity

Ocean Falls - The first machine to start up in Ocean Falls was at midnight on Tuesday February 4th. ...

One of the things that the strike in this industry showed is that people can and will live and work together. ... it was amazing how few people applied to the Incidental Funds of the two locals for additional strike relief ... many refused on the grounds that they were still getting by and things might get tougher later on. .. We salute those who helped others ... in helping to provide entertainment, in woodcutting, in toy making and in many other ways donated of their time and service to help the people of this community ...

One thing that was learned by the people during the strike, we believe, was that the union are themselves and not some outside group dictating to them ...

Ocean Falls on Short Time

Ocean Falls - Due to shortage of water the management of Crown Zellerbach Canada Limited, Ocean Falls Division approached the two unions here and stated that they would have to lay off from 60 or 75 men or else the employees would have to go on short time of four days one week and five days the next.

The members of both locals voted in favour of short time. Some members felt that management should be prepared to keep their employees working in periods when there was a shortage of water.

Prior to the announcement of short time or lay offs the newsprint machines at Ocean Falls had been running five days a week. Management now proposed to put them on four days a week. The specialty machines are to continue operating seven days a week. - Ex Joint Strike Committee Locals 312, 360 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ --------
