Union Sunday Postponed One Week
Ocean Falls suffered an over abundance of water due to inclement weather
plus the efforts of the rainmakers.
Consequently, Union Sunday had to be postponed from November 4 until
November 11 as on the 4th water in the lake was rising so rapidly that
even with all thirteen gates of the dam open, there was danger of the
lake washing out the land at the sides of the dam if the penstocks had
been closed for a shutdown

[photo] Miss Florence Wong is winner of the 10th Annual Scholarship of
Local 312. The scholarship, worth $250.00 is offered every year to the
student with the highest marks graduating from Charleson High School in
Ocean Falls.

Local 360 gained the following Job Rate Adjustments for increased speed
on No. 3 Paper Machine:
Machine Tender 2.82 to 2.88
Back Tender 2.52 to 2.57
Winderman 2.16 to 2.20
1st Helper 1.89 to 1.92
2nd Helper 1.82 to 1.84
Management did not agree with Local 360's request for a job rate
adjustment for No 3 Beaterman, the Specialty Inspectors and the
Specialty Testers.

Bob Beattie, for over 30 years barber in Ocean Falls is retiring this
month. Bob took a great interest in community activities, especially in
the local branch of the Canadian Legion. For many years he was a Sunday
school teacher.

Ocean Falls Emergency Fund
The Fund was started many years ago ... hourly and white collar workers
alike pay 25 cents a month in dues ... In years such as 1956 when income
exceeds expenditures the Fund usually donates something worthwhile to
the local hospital. This year it was $1.000.00 worth of operating room
instruments ... At the annual general meeting on February 16th the
following executive were elected: President - A. Akkerman, Vice
president - A. McCormick; Secretary - L. MacHattie; Treasurer - R.
Blackwell.

We wonder where labor reporter Bruce Young got his information when he
wrote that the two Hudson's Bay stores at Kitimat and Victoria "are
believed to be the only unionized department stores in Canada". Hudson's
Bay stores in Powell River and Ocean Falls have been organized for some
years. The department store in Ocean Falls was organized about 20 years
ago when Pacific Mills was still the owner, and when the Hudson's Bay
Co. took over, certification went with the store
