Do You Recall
"The United Worker" is in its fifth year of publication. Do you recall
the first issue which carried a contest with a cash prize to the winner
who would submit a suitable name. The January 1945 issue reveals that
two members submitted the same caption and both received prizes. They
were H.A. Allen of Local 312 and Sammy Hunter of Local 360. The former
still employed in the Finishing room and the latter a news machine
tender
Starting with this issue The United Worker will be delivered to homes of
ALL residents in Ocean Falls by reliable and competent delivery boys.
A Reminder
So that all our members may be familiar with the initial notice in
respect to current meal charges, we reprint the following notice of
April 5th, 1949:
Pacific Mills Ltd
Ocean Falls, BC
Notice to Ocean Falls Employees
During the fiscal year which will end on April 30th, 1949 your Company
will incur a loss of approximately one quarter million dollars in
providing Townsite services. This over all loss includes rentals, light
& power, steam heating, board and room services, beer parlor and General
Store operation.
The operation of our Martin Inn cafeteria where we provide a good
standard meal at 55 cents, involves a loss of approximately $170,000 per
annum and we contend that the price of a meal should be closer to the
cost thereof. It is our intention on May 1st, 1949 to institute in the
Martin Inn cafeteria a plan which will provide standard meals a varying
prices. That is, a meal including roast beef will be at one price
whereas a meal of stew will be a lower price.
On the basis of wage rates not being increased your company will
continue the policy of still absorbing the majority of Townsite losses
and it will be our policy during the coming year to maintain the present
level of rentals in the Townsite. ------------- C. W. E. Locke
