It was in Local 312 of the International Brotherhood of Pulp Sulphite
and Paper Mill Workers that I first won my spurs in the trade union
movement. If you look up in the old records of the local, I believe you
will find that I was initiated in November 1940 and was issued a
withdrawal card in March 1942. I was secretary and later vice president
of the Japanese section when Japanese workers were still in the plant.
I went into the mill in 1940 when I was green out of university and
first worked as general labor and later as operator in the acid plant.
The rate of pay was 57 cents per hour, substantially less than one half
the present rate.
Some of the most active union people at that time were Syd Andrews,
preside of the local; Brother Bunting, Bert Ollet, whom I met in Toronto
in 1944 when he was at the Trades and Labor Congress; Howard Webster,
and Brother Robertson in the steam plant.
I remember union meetings which were held in the old hotel which I
understand had been torn down and replaced by an ultra-modern building.

There are two outstanding examples of Clematis to be seen in season on
Front Street. One is a white or creamy colored Clematis on house 180,
the home of Mr. & Mrs. George Barry. Parker Bonney lived next door and
he planted it - brought it from his wife's home at Sapperton. There is
also a lovely blue Clematis at House 174, also planted by Parker Bonney.
