The Company Town
In this article we shall endeavor to review impassionately the general
detrimental effect of the Company Town and to suggest means by which a
few of these evils may be corrected.
From the outset it is apparent to any observer or resident of a Company
Town that this system works to destroy any thought or inclination on the
part of the worker to prove himself through his own initiative. The
Company domination is complete in all matters: work, social,
recreational, cultural and possibly even spiritual. Once located in a
Company Town the worker finds himself shorn of the responsibility of
Canadian manhood. The Company withholds from his pay cheque his rent
bill, his insurance, his pension, his light and his telephone bills. He
has just become another cog of the Company. It is the sincere opinion of
the writer that the company would be wise if in cooperation with the
Unions it were to work toward the establishment of a Town Council, for
only a constantly enlarged democracy will result in keeping good men in
this place, whereas if present conditions are allowed to exist good men
will leave Ocean Falls at the first opportunity which presents itself.
