On Sunday the 13th inst. the Sunday School Anniversary Services were
held. It is now two years since the school was organized. During this
last year the Sunday school has met regularly with one exception, and
that was at the request of the doctor that the school should not meet
owing to a case of measles in town.
The regular school session was held at 11 a.m. After the lesson period
several special pieces prepared for the Anniversary were rendered by the
children. The schoolhouse was nicely decorated for the occasion.
In the evening at 7:30 a splendid congregation gathered to do honor to
the school. During the service the following special items were
rendered:
Hymn ............ "Led by one who loves us" The Boys Quartette .......
"Love shows in our eyes" Misses Hazel Barrett and Sylvia Smaby Masters
Gordon Jamieson and H. Oda Recitation ...... "Our Birthday" Master
Gordon Jamieson Part Song ....... "For Me" Question sang by the whole
school replied to by Mrs. Scribner and Miss Smaby.
A portion of the recitaion "Our Birthday" reads as follows: ... But
while we are young and have seen many changes For teachers are diverse
and varied who've taught us You may think it strange, we know it sounds
eerie But one was a Pheasant (1) another a Fairy (2)
We lost a good secretary briefly called D (3) A pastor than whom a
better never Wilby (4) .....
Notes: (1) Miss B. Feasant; (2) Mr. W. Fairy; (3) Mr. J.G. Dieffenbach;
(4) Rev J.G. Wilby
The address suited to the occasion was on the "Boyhood of Jesus". This
was a red letter day for the Sunday School. Both services will long be
remembered by all who were present.
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Smaby commemorated the fifteenth anniversary of their
wedding day on Saturday 12th inst. The occasion was quietly celebrated
by the members of the family and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Smaby are the
pioneers at the Falls. We extend our warmest congratulations and hope to
see them celebrate their diamond jubilee.
The terrible tales of suffering and privations in the flood area in Ohio
stirred our hearts. A suggestion that something should be done by our
community was laid hold of and in a short time the sum of $109 was
raised. A cheque for this amount was forwarded to the treasurer of the
American Red Cross Society to assist them in their work of ameliorating
the distress and suffering in the afflicted district.
The OF Company is greatly extending its logging operations on South
Bentinck Arm. Two new camps to be known as numbers 7 and 9 are at
present in course of construction. In addition to which another camp has
been completed, known as headquarters camp.
A large wharf and general store have been erected. The Camosun calling
on Sunday last brought between 50 and 60 tons of supplies.
SS Mackinaw recently cleared from this port for Southern California with
one and a half million feet of lumber.
Large shipments of lumber of all kinds are regularly being shipped to
Prince Rupert, a large portion of which is to be used in the
construction of the dry dock. A considerable quantity is also being used
for sidewalks.
